Shakira and Usher wasted no time getting into the mix during the season 4 premier of "The Voice "(Airing Monday night March 25, 2013). The duo of new coaches mixed it up with now veteran coaches Blake Shelton and Adam Levine and plenty of viewers turned out to watch it all go down.
"The Voice" scored 13.4 million viewers for its season premiere episode. That is an 11% increase over the season 3 premier of the show. Clearly, the addition of these two new coaches as infused a new energy into the show and curiosity had viewers tuning in to see how they did.
For their part, Shakira and Usher did not disappoint. They had some good lines, sold themselves and even mixed it up with Blake and Adam. The two easily had the best lines of the night. At one point Shakira made fun of all the guys' different techniques that they employ when trying convincing a singer to pick them. It was very funny as she imitated them. Usher got a standing ovation from Blake for his comeback to Adam. Adam was pressing hard for a former Michael Jackson backup singer Judith Hill to join his team. At one point when someone pointed out how hard he was lobbying he said, "As far as I'm concerned, I'm running for president right now." Usher immediately responded by saying, "But I am looking for the first lady." It was smooth, cool and very funny. But it didn't work. She still picked Adam.
Both new coaches brought their own unique vibe to the set. Usher was cool, smooth and charming and Shakira was fiery, passionate and very funny. The singers themselves were as you would expect. There were some good singers and some great singers and a few that needed more work, but were off to a good start. The big challenge will be to see if "The Voice" can hold onto the energy it has created with this premier episode and to see if the viewers will stick around. If the ratings continue to be strong and improved over last season and the reviews for Usher and Shakira continue to be good, the producers may have a tough choice on their hands when Cee Lo and Christian Aguilera want to return.
